In the Shadowharper family, when a member's magic ability begins to manifest, a tattoo-like mark starts to form somewhere on their body. Strangely enough the location of the Mark seems to be similar per generation.

For instance, both Tanic and Merima have their marks on their forearms. Their children, Hawk and Seraya, manifested their Marks on their faces.

Seraya volunteers for the Red Cross's efforts in battling a new plague in southern Africa. It ultimately turns out to be a plague targetting superpowered beings.

After a long and difficult battle with the strange disease, Seraya is sent back to Paragon City to recover after becoming infected and medically dying. She is not expected to return to Africa, the Red Cross declaring her contributions far beyond expectation.
