[edit] Background

Trent was born and raised in Paragon City. He had a roughly normal childhood, if marked by one too many games of "Cops and Robbers" with the other neighborhood children. It was probably because his father, whom he greatly admired, was an officer in the PPD. It was not hard to see what he would be when he grew up.

Trent graduated from high school in the year 2000. Rather than attend Paragon City University (PCU), he elected to go to college out-of-state. This later turned out to be a fortuitous decision as the Rikti invaded two years later (just as he was finishing his sophomore year).

As Paragon City was blocked off to most civilian traffic, he was unable to get back in to find his family. Contacting them also proved problematic as the Rikti had cut off almost all lines of communication in an out of the city. All Trent could do was watch from afar and hope for the best. When the war ended in November, he quit his studies and raced home.

Fear gripped his heart as he approached the bombed-out shell that had once been his family's residence. After checking in with the local shelters—with no success—Trent then joined the thousands of former residents and current refugees waiting outside City Hall for any word about their loved ones. Fortunately, he didn't have to wait long as a friend of his father's recognized him and pulled him aside. Unfortunately, he only had bad news for Trent. He then received the word that his younger sister had died during a Rikti air raid in the early days of the war, that his mother likely perished during that same air raid (though her body was never recovered), and that his father was killed-in-action soon afterward in Atlas Park. Utterly devastated, Trent was then left alone to his grief.

Despite that, life went on. After a period of mourning, Trent went back to school. Since PCU was still recovering from the war, he transferred to a school in nearby Providence the very next semester. He graduated in the winter of 2004 with a degree in Criminal Justice.

The deaths of so many heroes and police officers during the war left a void that a plethora of super-powered villain groups were eager to exploit, and Paragon City suddenly found itself beset by crime levels unheard of before or even since. Robberies, vandalisms, kidnappings, and murders were committed in broad daylight; and the Paragon Police Department was forced to close off entire sections of the city into "Hazard Zones," struggling to function even on the most basic of levels. When Trent applied to the PPD, he was immediately snapped up. (And the fact that he was his father's son did earn him a few brownie points with the survivors of his father's precinct.)

Despite his inexperience, Trent proved himself to be a capable officer. Shoot-outs were commonplace, and Trent displayed such an aptitude for combat that his superiors immediately recommended him for the SWAT team. There he received advanced training with the latest weaponry and tactics. It also enabled him to tackle some of the more dangerous assignments, such as Hazard duty.

[edit] The Talos Island Incident

One of Trent's first assignments as a rookie member of the PPD SWAT involved a disastrous raid on what was supposed to be a mystical artifacts smuggling ring run by a group of Warriors. The PPD had been tracking these artifacts for months (as they were being used to perpetuate both small- and big-time crimes), but they could never figure out the distribution point. Finally the case broke when the PPD received a tip from someone supposedly on the inside and who wanted out of the Warriors.

Clues from the informant led the PPD to an "abandoned" warehouse located on Talos Island. After setting up a high-tech, 24-hour surveillance, the PPD was able to monitor foot-traffic to and from the warehouse. After several weeks of surveillance and a few more tips from the informant, the PPD finally had a good idea of what they might be up against. The green light was given and the PPD obtained the warrants necessary to enter the warehouse, seize the artifacts, and also extract the informant.

The PPD locked down the area and then ten members of the SWAT team, including Trent, were selected to storm the warehouse. As the smoke grenades crashed through the windows, the SWAT team moved in. Almost immediately, officers at the police barricade could hear gunfire coming from inside. Maneuvering through the thick smoke, Trent and his team expertly took down any resistance.

In one of the side office rooms, however, the SWAT team made a startling discovery. Inside, they found a body which seemed to match the description of the informant. Next to the body was a vial of hemlock, a deadly poison said to have been used to execute the ancient Greek philosopher Socrates.

Realizing that the informant had been found out, the leader of the team called for an immediate retreat. They didn't get very far, however, as Warriors sprang from their hiding places to ambush the retreating SWAT. Three men were killed in the vicious close-quarters fighting and the rest were quickly captured. Trent himself was shot in the leg.

It was here that Trent would get his first glimpse of the leader of these Warriors—a large, surly man named Claudius—with whom he would later have a few more confrontations. Holding the wounded SWAT team hostage, Claudius sent a message to the PPD outside that any attempt to enter the warehouse would result in their deaths. Inside, the SWAT team could see that Claudius was trying to buy time to get the goods and his people out of the warehouse through a secret passage to the sewers, but neither they nor the people outside knew if Claudius had any intention to make due on his threat. And indeed, the mere threat alone was enough to make the officers outside stand their ground.

As the Warriors scrambled to carry out the goods, whether through foolishness or bravado Claudius revealed that he had known that Argus—the informant—had been getting soft as of late and might try to rat them out. Claudius found the communique between Argus and the PPD and started bringing in Warriors through the sewers (so they wouldn't be noticed by the surveillance system) to quickly empty out the warehouse and utterly overwhelm the PPD should they step foot inside. Then as he moved to take care of Argus, he found that the traitorous Warrior had already ingested a vial of hemlock.

As Trent and his fellow SWAT awaited whatever fate had in store for them, PPD Ghosts were suiting up to launch a rescue operation. But as the Ghosts were in-route to the Talos warehouse, the PPD were taken by another surprise—Longbow!

While it is debatable that the PPD actually needed their help, it was for certain that they didn't ask for it and neither did they want it. And the officers already at the scene were adamant about not letting them pass, at the very least, not until the Ghosts showed up. But as it turned out, Longbow also had a vested interest in this smuggling ring, and to them time was of the essence.

Not only did Longbow reveal that the Warriors were already getting away with the evidence, they were also there to extract their own undercover agent, whom they feared had been compromised due to the actions of the PPD. Without waiting for any sort of authorization or approval from the officer-in-charge, the Longbow Spec-Ops rushed in.

By now the Warriors were almost done with their evacuation, but unbeknownst to either the Warriors or the SWAT, Longbow agents were swiftly and silently setting up their ambush. Whether Claudius intended to silence the witnesses before he left, only he knows. But as the Longbow launched their attack, the last of the Warriors put up only token resistance and quickly fled. They then sealed the secret passage behind them to prevent pursuit. The seven SWAT, many of them severely injured, were safely recovered.

The whole operation embarrassed the PPD greatly. While Trent and his unit suffered no blame for the debacle, his captain was forced to step down. It was hard for an organization still recovering from the Rikti war to lose a single officer, but to lose three highly-trained SWAT was a severe blow. And while the Longbow did not recover their own agent, either from among the dead or captured Warriors, they took solace in the fact that he likely escaped with the other Warriors, his cover intact.

Trent recovered from his wounds, but he was out of commission (read: chained to a desk) for at least a month. While he was grateful toward the Longbow Spec-Ops who had saved him and his unit, that gratitude was strongly tempered when he learned that Longbow might have had information that could've prevented the deaths of his comrades. Indeed, relations between Longbow and the PPD were severely strained that day.

In the meantime, Trent never forgot Claudius's face.

[edit] The Three Eye Detective Agency

Some time later, Trent was transferred to the Three Eye Detective Agency under the command of Detective Nathan Dolbian. Headquartered in the basement of an apartment complex in Kings Row and staffed by misfits, Trent wondered what he must have done to earn this assignment. Nevertheless, he was determined to make the best of it.

Trent has already been on several cases with his newfound comrades; and in that short time, he has grown to become quite fond of them, quirks and all.

Case Files
Here you will find information about the various case files that Trent has participated in.
The Power of Voodoo
Trent's first case with the Three Eye Detective Agency. He and this strange group of misfits investigate the kidnapping and mutilation of a member of the Lost while fending off seemingly random robbery attempts. Are these incidents connected somehow? And who is causing them?
Disappearing Act
The Three Eye Detective Agency gains a patron, and their first assignment for this individual is to recover some lockboxes that have been stolen from the Atlas Park Bank.
The Search for Seth
Mr. Wenkler has another mission for the misfit detectives. This time, they go under the radar on behalf of Preston James who, for some reason, is avoiding police involvement in the disappearance of his son.

[edit] Viva La Revolution

Some time afterward, Trent received word that Claudius had escaped from prison and had fled to the Rogue Isles, so he took it upon himself to go after the old Warrior. As usually the case with such extreme actions, he got more than he bargained for. He tracked Claudius's daughter Persephone Apollo to the apartment of one mercenary, James Nelson, and intended to interrogate the two. They were interrupted by a contingent of Marcone, who demanded that James give himself up. It was here that Trent got his first glimpse into the plight of the people of Port Oakes under the Marcone... and James's revolution against them.

Trent left the apartment and the Rogue Isles peacefully that day, but he soon found that he could not stay away when word reached him that James had gone missing. With the help of six Romanian brothers, Trent reunited with James then quickly found himself targeted by the Marcone for aiding him in the first place. Not only that, James's group of freedom fighters, the Untouchables, were being picked off one by one, and it quickly became a race to find who was brutally murdering them.

It was a betrayal.

Untouchable Phil Cardone had thrown in his lot with the Family. Trent and the brothers were forced to flee for their lives with a mortally wounded James in tow. Racing for James's tech gloves that could save his life, they were intercepted by Phil in Sharkhead, who had stolen the gloves and had claimed them for himself. A furious battle ensued, but in the end, Phil was beaten.

James, who had been revived by his tech gloves, spared Phil's life but nevertheless turned him over to the authorities for punishment. In the meantime, he and Trent parted ways as friends after thanking the cop for sticking with him through the whole ordeal, even though Trent himself had nothing to gain. James was permanently banned from Port Oakes. And whether the people curse his name for bringing trouble to their neighborhood or applaud him for standing up to the Marcone, the revolution lives on...

[edit] Rose the Rook

Trent didn't know that his chance run-in with a certain fledgling hero would further entangle him in the intrigue of the Isles. The hero's name was Rose, and she went by the moniker Rose the Rook. Normally, he would have eschewed her for her Longbow membership, but she was in a bit of a bind with a case of amnesia, so he agreed to help her dig up clues as to her identity.

It turned out her name was Rosemary Taylor and she was the sister of Rosalyn Taylor, AKA the Blood Red Rook, a high-ranking officer in the renegade Arachnos organization the Shadow Spiders. And for some reason, she was being sought by the former leader of the Shadow Spiders, Arbiter Death.

Since it was imperative to get to Rose before Arbiter Death did, Rook brought in Trent for questioning. Though he was rather miffed at being kidnapped, he managed to convince the Spiders that he meant her no harm and they even commissioned him to keep her safe while they dealt with Arbiter Death on their end...

[edit] The Recruitment Drive

(The following is playable in the Mission Architect! Look up @Sheyon to access this storyline!)

For once, things were quiet—well, as quiet as they could be in the King's Row precinct—until a Safeguard turned sour for Trent and his SWAT unit. Whoever the villains were, they were much more powerful than expected; and on top of that, there were clues that Arachnos was involved as well. Whatever was going on, it was big.

A city-wide investigation was launched to bring the villains to justice. And a number of Arachnos safehouses were discovered and cleaned out. But overall, it seemed that the villains were fleeing to one location, Talos Island.

The PPD mustered everything they could spare for the final operation, and Trent was on one of the SWAT teams present. As the PPD stormed the ship, Arachnos began pouring in seemingly from nowhere and with force that far, far belied initial estimations.

The whole thing was a trap. The target: every Psi-Cop and anyone else with even latent psionic abilities. Though the PPD managed to resist the trap, a few were taken in the confusion, Trent included.

[edit] The Shadow Spiders

The Shadow Spiders kept their eye on Rose, who had grown into a powerful heroine by her own right, but they had since lost contact with Trent. Intelligence raids revealed that Trent had not reported for duty for quite some time and was even listed as "missing." Unfortunately, they couldn't dig up much more than that, much less do anything about it.

Then one day, Rook received a telepathic distress call. It was Trent and he was on the run. The Spiders managed to rally at his location in St. Martial where they saw one lone Bane Spider trying to fend off a capture party. The Shadow Spiders ended it quickly and took Trent back to their orbital fortress, the Asgard, where he filled them in on what happened since his disappearance.

The Arachnos raid in Paragon City was part of a recruitment effort to bolster their psionic membership, and Trent was captured and indoctrinated into the Bane Spider corps, his mind linked to the hive. One day, he "woke up" and found that the voices were gone, so he fled. Naturally, being former Arachnos, Dr. Von Havencrabs suspected there was more to it than that. He offered Trent sanctuary as thanks for helping Rook's sister, but also kept him under strict surveillance in case of treachery, willing or otherwise.

It was during this time that Trent became more familiar with the Shadow Spiders and their way of life, and he had considerable difficulty adjusting or even relating to them. He wasn't used to their cavalier attitude toward the law, but nevertheless, he strove to make himself useful and not outstay his welcome. It was also during this time that he met rogue-Fateweaver Ilia Dulmaire.

The two grew closer somewhat, and Ilia, in an attempt to break him of the Bane Spider mind control, caused him to flee the Asgard, where he was then picked back up by Arachnos. The Shadow Spiders, naturally, don't let their people get captured like that and planned a rescue party to go after him. They got more than they bargained for... While the attempt succeeded, it resulted in the death of one Arren Starkweather.

Ilia, enraged at the death of her "sister", visited Trent in his cell. Literally, with an axe in hand, she seemed ready to kill him. There was no where to run now, and Trent had little choice but to submit to a second attempt. The entire might of the Bane Spiders fought back this time, but Ilia, a powerful Fateweaver, nevertheless managed to shatter the mind control node. And Trent was freed.

[edit] Going Home

Trent was freed now, but he was still reluctant to go home. Could he truly go back to his old life? Would he be accepted, trusted again? He took the plunge and found the response surprisingly receptive.

After undergoing an intense debriefing regarding his experience in the Rogue Isles, the PPD placed Trent in the Psi-Division. His training cut short, however, after a burst of psychic feedback relating to the Bane Spiders left him and a few other nearby trainees nearly incapacitated. They all made a full recovery, and while the brass was assured that there was absolutely no chance Trent could be mind-controlled again, he was deemed a liability.

Trent flushed out of training and instead of being returned to his SWAT unit, they handed him a different assignment: rebuild the Three Eye Detective Agency. The Three Eye had since fallen into much disrepair, and Trent was not thrilled at his perceived demotion. Nevertheless, Trent slipped back into the saddle and told himself he was doing this for the city he loved so much. The Three Eye still may not have the respect of the PPD, but at the end of the day, it is enough just knowing that he is helping to make the streets a safer place.

((Pending...))

[edit] Personality

Trent was, first and foremost, a police officer. He was completely dedicated to his work, almost to the point of workaholism. It was not that he is obsessed with "climbing the ladder of success"—far from it. It was just that he has nothing else. His family was dead, and he was married to his job (ie. single and not looking).

However, not all saw this as a disadvantage. He certainly didn't. With no one else waiting for him at home—except maybe the cat—he had a tendency to jump into things with both feet. This had landed him in a sticky situation more than once, but he had always managed to extricate himself from it. Nevertheless, he was not afraid to take risks that others may shy from, particularly if they were life-threatening or combat-related. He knew he can handle it due to his (over-?) confidence in his own abilities, and he certainly worked hard and trained hard for such things. To him, other people's lives took on a greater precedence than his own and though this is true of most police officers and super-heroes, Trent took it a step further.

When it comes to investigative work, however, he played it a little more cautiously. He was by-the-book, and when bringing a criminal to justice, he wanted there to be no mistakes, no loose ends. Seeing criminals walk free on technicalities rankled on him greatly.

The most notable exception to this had been his pursuit of Claudius. Without telling anyone, Trent took a few days off and journeyed to the dangerous Rogue Isles to bring him back. Though Trent would adamantly say that he was over Claudius, his behavior showed that he was still somewhat bothered by the Warrior and would stop at nothing to see him behind bars. Trent's encounter with Fearghas, however, affected him more deeply than he would like to admit. But after seeing a good man on the wrong side of the law throw himself into a cause more noble than his own petty revenge, Trent has had to stop and think about his own actions and about what wearing the badge really means.

[edit] Skills and Abilities

Trent possesses no super-powers. Instead, he relies on his training to bring down the forces of evil.

Marksman - Trent is an expert marksman. Whether carrying his personal sidearm or a standard issue assault rifle, Trent demonstrates a cool head and a steady hand and is able to hit his target from long distances.

Stamina - As a law enforcement officer in post-war Paragon City, staying in shape is an absolute must. To do this, Trent runs everyday and performs other aerobic workouts at least four days a week.

Telepathy - Trent inherited psionic abilities from his mother, though this power went largely unnoticed for most of his life. The Bane Spiders have awakened this gift somewhat, though Trent's telepathic potential is very mild at best. Nevertheless, he is trying to hone this ability to the fullest. What he lacks in strength, he attempts to make up for in agility.

[edit] Equipment

Assault Rifle - This high-powered rifle is very accurate and features a built-in scope. Typically used on SWAT or other major operations.

Pistol - Trent's personal sidearm. He is never without it. If he is plainly-clothed, then it is probably hidden somewhere on his person, along with an extra clip or two of ammunition.

Taser - A standard-issue PPD taser. Like his sidearm, he is never without it. Typically used to subdue a fleeing target, to stun an attacker who gets too close, or simply to end a fight quickly.

Ballistic Vest - A technological boon, light enough to be worn under plain clothes. More bullet-resistant than bullet-proof; but better than nothing, right?

Revolver - His father's old weapon, a Colt .357. If he's feeling particularly nostalgic, he may carry this around as an alternate or an additional back-up weapon.

Bane Spider Armor - Trent fled from the Bane Spiders with only the armor on his back. Though rarely used nowadays (for obvious reasons), it is still a highly valuable piece of combat armor.

Cloaking Device - Generally part of the Bane Spider armor, Trent has modified it so it can be worn on his belt at all times.

Bane Spider Mace - Like most Bane Spider maces, this one is augmented with sharpened blades for extra damage. This is in addition to the standard features of energy blast and web grenade attachments. Because of its size and because it is very obviously an Arachnos weapon, he reserves it for independent operations.

[edit] Affiliations

A list of people and organizations with whom Trent has ties.

[edit] Friendly

People

  • Jean-Luc Bedeau - An Etoilian freedom fighter. The two men were drawn together by similar ideals, and Trent has increasingly been seen in the man's company. He is convinced that if anyone could liberate the Isles without destabilizing it, it is Bedeau.
  • Ilia Dulmaire - Ilia was the one who snapped Trent's connection to the Bane Spider hive mind. The two shared a brief romance, though she has since disappeared...
  • James Nelson - Another person with whom Trent had gotten off on the wrong foot. James initially despised Trent because he thought Trent was just another hero with his own agenda. But after Trent stuck by James in his ordeal with the Marcone, the two have come to share a mutual respect.
  • Rose the Rook - The twin sister of the infamous Blood Red Rook. Supposedly killed in the same car accident that disfigured Rook, Rose now mysteriously walks the streets of Paragon City, her memories shattered. Trent has been using his connections to help piece together clues as to her identity and how she can reunite with her sister.

Organizations

  • Paragon Police Department - With the death of his natural family during the early days of the Rikti War, the Paragon Police Department has become Trent's new family. Like his father before him, Trent works hard to keep the streets free from crime. Though with the rise of so many super-powered villain groups over the years, this young officer definitely has his work cut out for him.
  • Etoile Liberation Front - Trent publicly supports Jean-Luc Bedeau, however he hides the fact that he is a member of his organization, the Etoile Liberation Front. (As a rogue Arachnos operative, he has good reason to.)
  • Shadow Spiders - Trent was interrogated by this ex-Arachnos organization because of his ties to Rose the Rook—the twin sister of the Blood Red Rook. Though he spurns their oft-illegal activities, he is grateful to them for taking him in after his "stint" with Arachnos.
  • Three Eye Detective Agency - Seen by many as the whipping boy of the PPD, Trent questioned his assignment to this semi-independant band of misfit detectives. He now holds the reins of the organization, working to help clean up the streets of Kings Row.

[edit] Neutral

People

  • Persephone Claudia - The daughter of Claudius the Warrior, Persephone and Trent share a rocky relationship. He doesn't trust her because she's Claudius's daughter, and she doesn't trust him because he's after her father. After the disappearance of James Nelson, however, the two have recently called a truce.
  • Gentle Night - Daniela and her brothers (Cezar, Remus, Vasile, Gabi, Sergiu, and Virgiliu) were originally untrusting of Trent, especially when they found out that he was actually a police officer, but now they are all on the run from the Marcone for aiding James Nelson in his vendetta/revolution. Armed with Uzis and Molotov cocktails and other heavy weaponry, the Romanian brothers are often amused when Trent tries to settle things the quiet way.
  • Riflecat - An enigmatic sort Trent met while working on a case. Now, if he can only get her to talk about what's been bothering her...

Organizations

  • Longbow - Trent dislikes Longbow for reasons other than the Talos Island Incident. He sees them as an upstart knock-off of law enforcement agencies that fills their front-lines with idealistic youths who have no idea of the dangers they are getting themselves into. But after enduring the stink of chasing an escaped convict to the Rogue Isles—without orders—Trent now operates under the jurisdiction of Freedom Corps. Though he is loathed to working with Longbow, he is granted a measure of autonomy to conduct investigations and it also gives him the authority to bring escaping criminals back to Paragon City—not that the resident villains recognize his authority in the first place...
  • The Centari Corporation - Trent is covertly investigating one of the officials of this organization into the death of a man. Though after having nearly been kidnapped while on a tour of one of their facilities, he's not sure how much longer his cover may hold.

[edit] Hostile

People

None... for now.

Organizations

  • Arachnos - Trent is a rogue Arachnos Bane Spider. As such he has to keep his head down whenever he is in the Rogue Isles on business, official or otherwise.
  • Black Tie - Trent does not hide the fact that he is a friend of Jean-Luc Bedeau. And Bad Dream does not hide the fact that he has it out for the same man. By the same token, Trent may be at odds with the organization.

[edit] Trivia

Little tidbits about Trent that don't go anywhere else.

[edit] IC (Roleplay Notes)

  • For a "simple cop", Trent has a lot to hide. However, do not just walk up to him and attempt to blackmail him as Trent goes to great lengths to cover his bases, especially within the Rogue Isles (and he has good reason to). ASK ME and I will happily discuss what your characters may know.
  • Trent may be recognized by Arachnos characters, but particularly by Bane Spiders. He is a rogue. Feel free to know this.
  • A unidentified young man matching Trent's description was once wanted by the Marcone in Port Oakes in connection to the revolutionary James Nelson. The bounty was mysteriously dropped several months later, around the time the Arachnos started their "recruitment drive."
  • Trent exclusively introduces himself by his last name. He absolutely hates his first name, and the only people he has ever allowed to call him by his first name was his family. (If you know his first name ICly, it is probably because you have read some sort of official file of his: school record, medical record, police profile, ect.)
  • Trent has a cat. It is a female blue tabby. He calls her Allie: 1) a play on alley cat and 2) after his sister Alicia. His upstairs neighbor (a nice old lady) took care of her when Trent went missing in 2009.
  • As the result of a previous case, Trent bears a scar on his left hand that runs the length of his palm. It is clearly visible if Trent is wearing his civvies.
  • Trent will probably never admit it, but after his first encounter with Fearghas, he is totally jealous of his hair (in a manly way, of course)!

[edit] OOC

  • Trent was originally created as a joke character. Half-life 2 fans might recognize that Trent's primary uniform resembles that of a Civil Protection officer (or MetroCop). As MetroCops were little more than legalized thugs, Trent was also supposed to be a villain character. But then I decided I wanted to explore the Hero-side of things, so I made him a Blue. I had no intention of doing anything with him other than get to 50.
  • Trent's first name is homage to Malcolm Reynolds, captain of the Serenity, from the sci-fi series Firefly. And his last name I took from Edison Trent, the player character of the game Freelancer.
  • You know those pesky SWAT Equalizers that slow your characters down with web grenades and glue and set up all those annoying acid traps? Yeah, that's Trent.
  • If you wish to roleplay with this character OR if you wish to participate in one of our case files, send a tell to @Sheyon.
