Mindstryker
From Unofficial Handbook of the Virtue Universe

[edit] Personality
Mindstryker displays a serious, even grim, attitude most of the time. When he does display a sense of humor, it's dry and understated. He cares for his friends deeply, but can be a bit bossy at times. He is quick to anger, but usually gets over it quickly. He likes to work out problems in his head, looking at all possible scenarios before deciding on a course of action. Once he has a target, an objective, or a goal, he's absolutely relentless. Can be very dogged, even stubborn at times.
[edit] Background
[edit] Early Years
Mindstryker was born Jack Whitney, to George and Elisa Whitney, and grew up in the tough 'Gish' neighborhood of Kings Row. His father, a PPD patrol officer, and his mother, a seamstress at the King Garment Works, supported their family as best they could. Tragedy struck the family, however, when Elisa was killed in a car accident when Jack was 12. Jack and his father 'closed ranks' and became closer, but their bond was severly tested 4 years later, when Jack began manifesting mutant psychic abilities. The terrified and confused teen began to have increasing difficulty suppressing his power. His father, believing that Jack needed the kind of focus and discipline police work had brought him, suggested to Jack that he join the PPD.
[edit] PPD
Jack spent the next 2 years as an intern in the Psi-Division, until he was old enough to attend the PPD Academy at 18. During his time in the Academy, he met Morgan Thomas, and the two became fast friends due to their similar backgrounds and abilities. The two graduated in the top 10% of their class, and to their delight, were partnered together working in the same precinct. Jack even established a permanent psychic link with Morgan, viewing him as a brother. However, after a rash of incidents involving stolen evidence, drugs, and guns disappearing, Jack and Morgan were assigned to find out how it was happening. In the course of the investigation, Jack learned that Morgan was involved in the sales, and when he confronted his friend, Morgan tried to kill him. Jack had no choice but to kill Morgan. Unfortunately, their precinct captain was the ringleader of the illegal sales, and framed Jack for both the sales and Morgan's 'murder'. The ex-Psi Lieutenant was tried, convicted, and sentenced to life imprisonment in Zigursky Penitentiary.
[edit] Behind Bars
The Zig.
Paragon's worst prison, home to the worst of the worst criminals, and a death sentence for those without the will or ruthlessness to survive. At 26, Jack was condemned to spend the rest of his life in the same prison he'd sent dozens of criminals to. Jack's corrupt ex-captain made absolutely sure that the warden 'let slip' Jack's past as a cop. To survive, he had to become just as ruthless and as brutal as any of the inmates. While he didn't engage in unnecessary cruelty, he wouldn't hesitate to do what he had to survive. He used every prinicple of psychological warfare he knew, to inspire fear in his fellow inmates, even getting a tattoo from a convicted Tsoo inkman to make his appearance more unsettling. Meanwhile, Jack filed appeal after appeal, using every contact he had that would still speak to him, to investigate the case. Running out of options, Jack sent an appeal to the one man who he never expected to sympathize with his plight: the PPD hero Blue Steel. Unknown to Jack, however, Blue Steel came from a background fairly similar to his own. He continued the investigation on Jack's behalf, exposing the corrupt captain and clearing Jack of all charges. However, embittered by his experiences, Jack declined to return to the Psi-Corps, and registered himself as a hero, taking the name Mindstryker, and leaving the PPD behind.
[edit] Vanguard
Disillusioned and adrift, Mindstryker would not have to wait long to find a new employer. The Vanguard outpost in Atlas had taken note of the ex-cop's skill, grit, and psychic power, and offered him in place in their organization. With little reason to refuse, Jack signed up, straining his relationship with his 'by-the-book' father. In the Rikti War Zone, Mindstryker's skill and experience increased greatly. He began to identify with Vanguard's 'whatever it takes' mentality, and to this day he's fond of saying that the PPD taught him how to fight, three years in the Zig taught him how to survive....but Vanguard taught him how to win.
[edit] A New Chapter
Seven years later, since Vanguard wasn't paying enough to fully satisfy him, Jack started taking on mercenary work. After a time, he was approached by a representative from a group called the 'Phalanx of Paragon', and offered a lucrative position. He accepted, and it was there that he met Raina Sylvir. Forming an unlikely friendship with her, he began to discover what it meant to be a hero. Their friendship was tested, but in the end, they stood by each other, and escaped the organization, which revealed itself to be the criminal organization Villains of Paragon City. Mindstryker established a permanent telepathic channel with Raina, and it, and the shared trials and triumphs they'd experienced, have deepened their friendship, and brought them to truly love and respect each other.
Jack and Raina, and other friends who'd escaped the tyranny of the VoPC, have joined Safe Havens, an organization committed to providing a safe place for heroes and civilians in trouble to go, when no one else can help them. Their family at Safe Havens also shared in the joy of Jack and Raina's wedding.
[edit] Good to Know
- He likes Scotch, and holds his liquor pretty well. If you get in a drinking contest with him, he's no lightweight.
- He's in peak physical condition for an unenhanced human.
- He usually keeps a 'poker face' and tends to respond to any serious shock or surprise with a quip or deadpan remark. (Kind of British in his sense of humor.) Those who know him best recognize the facade for what it is, his attempt to keep a grip on the situation.
- Greatest fear is that he'll 'cross the line' in pursuit of his goals, becoming no different than what he fights.
- CANNOT SKI. Any attempts he's made invariably end in disaster and injury.
[edit] RP Info
When I RP combat with Mind, I notice that I tend to use certain terms when posting his actions. Lately, I've been told that I'm not being specific enough for people to understand how to react. So here's a brief rundown of what I mean when I say:
A 'psychic' or 'telepathic' attack - This will cause disorientation and headaches. The severity, and any visible sign of what he's doing, depends on how much power he puts into it. Depending on the severity of the attack, and your character's natural psychic resistance, they may be stunned or experience trouble moving correctly. He can also attempt to confuse, placate, enrage, or tranquilize an enemy.
A 'telekinetic' attack - This is pure physical force. These will appear to be a light-blue 'rippling' effect. IC, Mind has used these to stop an oncoming tanker truck dead in its tracks, so there's some substantial force behind these. He can also lift up to 30 tons telekinetically, although anything over 20 tons becomes very taxing on his endurance. IC, by using two opposing lines of telekinetic force, Mindstryker once ripped an Arachnobot in half.
[edit] Special Powers
Mindstryker has mastered the ability to activate or de-activate the body's pain receptors telepathically. This gives him the ability to inflict or negate pain, as little or as much as he wants.
His incredible control of his telekinesis enables him to perform very fine, detailed tasks with it. One example of this is that he can pick locks telekinetically.
He can also use telekinesis to manifest great strength, and slow down projectiles, although he hasn't mastered these abilities yet, and they take great concentration.
[edit] IC Comments
((If you know Mindstryker, you're welcome to leave a comment.))
"Jack? He's stood by me through a lot.. He's the one person in this world that I can trust implicitly and don't have to keep secrets from. That means a lot to me. It's why I love him and will do anything for him." - Raina Sylvir
"It is rare that you meet a hero with such a strong sense of honor. Few have shown the courage he already has." - Rusty
"It's once been told that hell is made for mutiners and traitors. Well, this isn't the case now, is it?" John Starkweather
"Two things I can say about Jack. First is he can be a massive tool. Second, he can be one of the best men I've met. I trust him more then most." Jack LeBeuregard
"Comrade in arms, loyal friend, confidante, guide, and student. I'm going to need a thesaurus for more superlatives... I am as devoted to him as I am to Raina. He won't let me touch his butt, though." Grimaulkin
"The man doesn't belong in hell, he doesn't belong in heaven, he doesn't belong on Earth, he doesn't belong on crazy alien planet #15432. He belongs in a void of confusion. He'd make a lot of friends there." ~Agent Valos
[edit] Theme Songs
- Indestructible by Disturbed - Shows Mind's determination and occasional ruthlessness when pursuing a goal or a target
