[edit] Background

Despite being born and raised in the rough-n-tumble world of the Rogue Isles, Christopher Dyers had a relatively normal childhood. His parents didn't have a lot of money, but Chris never had to worry about the roof over his head, clothes on his back, or food on the table... until his father was diagnosed with terminal cancer when Chris was fifteen.

His father died a year later, but his medical bills sapped the family of what little they had and Chris—the eldest of two sons—did what he could to help out. Though his mother still loved her sons dearly, there was simply nothing she could do to provide for their future. With no money for college and very little prospects, Chris Dyers enlisted in Arachnos on his eighteenth birthday.

[edit] The Shadow Spiders

Dyers did well at boot camp, so well that he was allowed the rare privilage of choosing his first duty station. Having heard about the exploits of one Arbiter Death and the years he spent in enemy territory with his Villains of Paragon City, Dyers chose the Shadow Spiders.

Whatever Dyers was expecting from the command of Arbiter Starkweather turned out to be anything but. Greeted by a rag-tag bunch of misfits, Dyers handed a very drunk Dr. Von Havencrabs his transfer papers and then quickly found himself on the receiving end of a Jack Daniels enema.

It was too late for him to transfer out.

Chris's youth and enthusiasm made him a ripe target for many of the Shadow Spiders' jokes, including that of the Arbiter's daughter Arren Starkweather. The resulting drunkeness—all caught on tape and conveniently replayed when the Arbiter was visiting the base—was enough for Starkweather to have Dyers transferred to Bloody Bay as soon as he came of the appropriate threat level (15), but a thorough investigation conducted by Markel Smythe spared the youth an early death.

Hoping to help the new recruit adapt to his new unit, Markel then ordered Dyers to get to know his fellow Spiders by going on missions with them. Resigned to his situation, Dyers nevertheless was determined to make the best it. But fate would leave him no respite.

[edit] Tortured

The night Markel was beaten into a coma by Black Tie was also the night Dyers had his own run-in with Dr. Von Smashenface. Dyers came home from assignment to find the Shadow Spider base crawling with Black Tie operatives, including Bad Dream himself. Joining Amok Valraa, the two fought the Black Tie but they were grossly outnumbered.

Dyers became separated from Amok and fought Victor Von Smashenface alone, but it was immediately clear that the massive orange-skinned brute was toying with him. Victor crushed both of Chris's feet and pinned him upside-down against the wall with a curved metal pipe. Amok came back to assist but was promptly attacked by the rest of Black Tie. Sometime during the fight the base generator became damaged, and Amok teleported the trapped Dyers away from the explosion. He left Dyers near the entrance and went back in a last ditch effort to repel the intruders... But Amok was forced to flee.

As Dyers tried to drag himself out of the base, the young Wolf Spider then found himself alone, surrounded, and utterly defenseless against the approaching Black Tie. Victor proceeded to strip him naked and hang him by his wrists from the ceiling. Disappearing around the corner for a minute, he returned with Dr. Von Havencrabs' beloved enema machine—much to the horror of Black Tie, actually. Jamming the probe into Dyers, Victor interrogated him briefly, twisting one of his already-shattered feet 180 degrees before injecting him with a payload of fire ants.

Even Bad Dream was deeply disturbed by the grisly scene, and it was only though his intervention that Victor ceased his sick torture. They left him hanging there, intending for the Shadow Spiders to find him the next day. However Psalmchild, being the last to leave, took pity on him—removing the probe, cutting him down, and even soothing his wounds and covering him with her cloak before disappearing to follow her comrades.

[edit] Cursed

Dyers quickly recovered from his injuries, but the entire experience scarred him deeply. He vowed never again would he be so helpless in the hands of his enemies and he pushed himself very hard in his training, eventually earning the right to wear the collar of a Wolf Spider Tac-Ops. It seemed that the ranks of the Huntsmen or the Crab Spiders were not that far off for the young soldier.

However, all his hurts and his anger had caught the attention of one of the Relics of Power, the seductress Hierophant Araana. Dyers was subconsciously attracted to Araana one night in Pocket D. Tantalizing the youth, Araana promised that if he would give himself to her, she would fulfill his every desire and he would never be powerless again.

Dyers agreed, and Araana placed around his neck a stunning necklace inlaid with rubies and sapphires and magical runes. Almost immediately, the necklace fused through his armor and into his chest. The power of the Cursed Ones flowed through him and instantly he felt empowered, rejuvenated as if he could take on Lord Recluse himself—much less Victor Von Smashenface.

However, Chris's transformation did not go unnoticed by Amun Aergad. Amun confronted the youth the next day, but Dyers vehemently denied everything. When he could not hide it, Araana began whispering to him, goading him into attacking... and he did. Shooting Dr. Von Havencrabs, Dyers escaped to Port Oakes with Amun and Arren in pursuit. There he was joined by Araana herself and the four launched into a pitched battle.

It was here that Dyers unleashed one of the powers of his cursed relic—super strength. Dyers battled Arren and seemed to triumph, but he was gravely wounded by her razor-sharp tendrils. Not only that, he and Araana were forced to flee from Arren's explosive aura.

[edit] AWOL

After Chris's battle with Arren, the young soldier knew he could never return. His fears were confirmed when Markel recovered from his coma and, as the Overseer was brought back up to speed on events, issued an arrest order on Dyers.

Feeling betrayed Dyers went AWOL from the Shadow Spiders, watching from afar as the Black Tie war raged on. Chris's whereabouts during this time were largely unknown, but it is speculated that Araana showed him the secret base of the Relics of Power—the Outside. When the Shadow Spider splintered from Arachnos, he emerged from hiding and began searching for the one man he knew he could trust—the White Widower.

[edit] Relics of Power

Related Article: Relics of Power

Dyers was once a member of the ancient group of immortal corrupters known as the Relics of Power. Seduced by the Hierophant Araana, Dyers accepted a cursed relic out of the insecurities that arose after his humiliation at the hands of Victor Von Smashenface.

Like all Relics of Power, Dyers was gifted with immortality and a keen magic sense. He could detect all magical auras, items, and beings within a five-mile radius, plus he could instinctively sense others who were "like him"—other Cursed Ones. However, his cursed relic also granted him a few other powers. Armed with super strength, he could crush bone as easily as a normal human might crush an egg and could leap incredible distances in a single bound.

Dyers did not believe that he was Cursed. In fact, he scoffed at anyone who told him he was. His relic had given him everything he had ever asked for, and he would have stopped at nothing to exact revenge on the one who humiliated him.

But Chris's anger didn't extend just to Victor—Araana pulled his strings. Magically attracted to her, Chris had a dire fear of separation, and this made him an extremely jealous and paranoid individual. The more she whispered to him that others are trying to tear them apart, the greater his anger becomes. And his rage fueled his power. In fact, when he totally surrendered himself to his relic, he found that he could harden his body to stone to protect himself and also the cursed amulet fused to his chest, turning him to an unstoppable force of nature.

All that came to an abrupt end when he finally decided to tangle with his nemesis. Fortunately for Victor—who had since died, been resurrected, and rejoined the Shadow Spiders—he was not alone. In his blind rage, Dyers attacked them but grossly underestimated his former comrades. He tried to flee, but they tracked him down and forcibly removed the cursed relic from his chest, freeing him from it's influence.

Dyers continues to make amends to his fellow Spiders, but every so often he is vividly reminded of the depths he was willing to sink in order to sate his hatred.

[edit] Affiliations

A list of people and organizations with whom Dyers has ties. (Feel free to add your name, and I will get to it when I can.)

[edit] Friendly

People

  • Demon Maker Valraa - Chris had always had a crush on Lerezal, perhaps because of the kindness she showed him when he first arrived. Upon his return to the unit, Doctor Von Havencrabs set the two up on a date, and now they are considered an item!
  • Dr. Von Havencrabs - The Doctor's pity for the youth drove him to chase Dyers down and make him give up his relic. The Doctor has since taken Dyers under his wing, giving him tips as a Crab Spider and even teaching him his signature Bile Spray. Dyers sees Doc as a sort of father figure and he works hard not to disappoint him.
  • Markel Smythe - Upon Chris's arrival to the Shadow Spiders and the relentless pranks pulled on him by his fellow members, Markel sought to help the young solder integrate into his new unit. Following their respective beatings by Victor Von Smashenface, Dyers vowed "never again" as he watched over Markel's comatose body. Chris bears a great deal of respect for Markel and acts as his aide of sorts.
  • White Widower - Dyers saw the White Widower as the leader that Arbiter Starkweather never was. The White Widower is one of Dyers' commanding officers and he respects and trusts him with his life.

Organizations

  • Shadow Spiders - Because of Arbiter Starkweather's leadership style, Dyers discovered that the Shadow Spiders was not all that it was cracked up to be, and he had difficulty adjusting to his new unit. He left when the Spiders sought to restrain him because of his cursed relic but he has since re-established ties with them.
  • Arachnos Special Tactical Service - When Dyers fled the Shadow Spiders, he turned to the White Widower's unit—the Arachnos Special Tactical Service. Dyers is still technically attached to the ASTS and he maintains his Arachnos affiliation through them.

[edit] Neutral

People

  • Arren Starkweather - Arren was the lead prankster. Dyers was willing to forgive her following her own torture at the hands of Victor Von Smashenface. But upon Chris's return to the Shadow Spiders, Arren still antagonizes him by replaying the horrid screams of Crab Spiders as she rips their backpacks from their bodies.
  • Dr. Von Smashenface - Dyers hates Victor with all of his might; however, he finds that he is unable to lift a finger against him because of Havencrabs's warning. Because he respects the Doctor, he obeys. Nevertheless, he is still uncomfortable around Victor and the topic of probing.

Organizations

  • Relics of Power - Dyers can still sense his former peers and he views them with an odd sort of curiosity. Dyers did not know the whole story behind the "Relics of Power" and neither did he care. But he looks back now and he realizes just how far he was willing to go in his quest for revenge, and he is ashamed.

[edit] Hostile

People

  • Bad Dream - The leader of Black Tie. Victor's torture had even made Bad Dream squeamish; however, that doesn't stop Chris from seeing him as partially responsible.

Organizations

  • Black Tie - The world would be better off without them.

[edit] Trivia

Little tidbits about Dyers that don't go anywhere else.

[edit] IC

  • Has been the victim of three enemas.
    • Jack Daniels, administered by a very drunk Doctor Von Havencrabs when Dyers first arrived to the Shadow Spiders. All new recruits are required to be vaccinated against the zombie virus; the Doctor just chooses to administer it rectally... This time he added something else to the mix!
    • Vodka, pranked by Arren Starkweather. When an encounter with the Circle of Thorns turned sour, Dyers just barely managed to activate his emergency teleport. He collapsed from the base's reclamation chamber and into Arren's waiting arms. The resulting drunkenness—all caught on tape—was what landed him in trouble with Arbiter Starkweather the next day.
    • Guatemalan Fire Ant, as part of the torture by Victor Von Smashenface.

[edit] OOC

  • Dyers was originally supposed to be a light-hearted character. Light-hearted!
  • After his torture at the hands of Victor, I had planned to kill him off for a variety of reasons.
    • I wanted the danger posed by Black Tie to sink into the Shadow Spiders; but later when I found out that several of them had already killed off their characters, I scrapped that idea.
    • I just wasn't sure if I wanted two dark and brooding characters. I have since discovered, however, that Dyers has a potential for corruption that has surprised even me.
  • At first, I was going to have Dyers die from his torture. Nixing that, I was then going to kill him off when he got his Crab Spider backpack. There would've been a scene where Dyers, eager for revenge, picked a fight with Victor and Bad Dream and was subsequently killed after being tortured yet again—this time with his own longfangs.
