The man who would become Capt Atom was inspired early in his life by his fathers love of comic heroes from the Golden Age. Young John Adam read these old stories with much enthusiasm, and harboured a fantasy of one day becomong a super hero.
After graduating college with a degree in nuclear physics, Adam joined the US Army as an officer, where he rose to the rank of Captain. His soldiers refered to him as "Captain Atom", a play on his surname and his background in nuclear science. As a nuclear phyisicist, Adam was eventually transferred into a nuclear warfare unit, researching low yield, man portable nuclear weapons.
After about a year in this capacity, Adam was involved in a containment breach that exposed him to a high amount of beta radiation. He was hospitalized, but showed no sign of injury. Little did he know at the time, the radiation changed his DNA and granted him super powers. He has left the army and moved to Paragon City to test his powers in the harsh environments found in some of the cities neighbourhoods.
