[edit] Character History

When Elizabeth Burton had discovered that her grandmother was the Golden Age heroine known as Ameircan Maiden, she had hoped to one day become a hero herself. But sadly, she possessed no powers of her own with which to become one. Resigned to being a secretary in Longbow, Elizabeth was given the opprotunity of a lifetime. The legendary heroine Lady America had been killed in action against the Rikti, and the government was searching for a new woman to assume the name and title. Elizabeth jumped at the chance to live her dream; no matter the risks of the process which would give her powers.

She spent weeks at a government-contracted labratory, receiving various chemical and radiation treatments in an attempt to endow her with powers. Eveutally, the treatments were successful, as she gained the ability to project powerful bolts of energy. Donning a costume specially made for her, Elizabeth Burton set out to Paragon City as the new Lady America.

However, as Lady America, she received less than a warm reception from the hero community; many of whom greatly respected the original Lady A, and saw Elizabeth as a second-rate hero trying to fill the shoes of a dead woman. This negative reaction caused Elizabeth to second guess herself all the time, and eventually, she dropped out of the project; unable to live up to Lady America's reputation.

When the original Lady America seemingly returned from the dead, Elizabeth was happy to give her back her name and title. After her percieved failure as Lady Ameirica, Elizabeth sunk into a deep depression and began drinking heavily. She quit Longbow and spent a month in a rehab clinic drying out. After getting out of rehab, she returned to Boston to try to rebuild her life. Even though she still possessed her powers, Elizabeth had no intention to use them any longer.

The was until her grandmother, the original American Maiden, came to her. She told Elizabeth that she didn't need to follow in Lady America's footsteps; that she had another legacy that she could proudly carry on; namely that of American Maiden. Realizing her grandmother was right, Elizabeth Burton once again donned her costume and rechristened herself as a new American Maiden for a new generation.

Since reemerging on the scene as American Maiden, Elizabeth has completly turned the corner in her life. She is now a well-known and respected hero and teammate, as well as a good friend to many of her allies. She was recently offered a position as Longbow's liaison officer to the United Sentinels of America; her main duties are to further continued cooperation and assistance between both orgaizations.

[edit] Weaknesses and Limitations

Ameircan Maiden's powers expend a great deal of her bio-energies. Prolonged usage will weaken her significantly and even leave her unable to use her powers for a period of time until she is able to "recharge" herself.

[edit] Equipment

American Maiden's costume is highly resistant to damage and provides her limited protection from the elements. She carries a standard USA comm bracelet, as well as several arrest tags for transporting villians to the Zig. Her position in Longbow allows her access to equipment and personnel as needed.

[edit] Trivia

For a long time, American Maiden dyed her hair black to avoid being labeled as a "Dumb Blonde". She recently went back to her original hair color, however.
