In an alternate future, Agent Cardiac is a mutant villain aligned with the so-called Evolutionists. In this timeline, Cardiac is a member of a corrupt version of Evolution-X. She has been sent back in time to infiltrate the group and kill the group's leader, Metal Smith.

Sophia Reese's early life is a mystery to everyone, including herself. All that is known is that she suffered a severe traumatic experience which shattered her fragile young psyche. She became a young woman obsessed with death and destruction. No matter who she came into contact with, someone ended up dead. It was never for certain whether she was the cause or merely coincidence. After a particularly gruesome incident involving Human Supremacists, Sophia found herself on the doorstep of the once mighty Evolution-X Academy. The legendary training ground for some of history's greatest mutant heroes had become nothing more than a shell of its former self. Recent schoolmasters had turned the Academy into a training ground for mutants who were fanatically loyal to the mutant-led government. Sophia spent several years at the Academy. It was here that her mutant powers were able to be sufficiently analyzed. Along with being a naturally gifted fighter, Sophia was able to store electricity within her body, and release it in a variety of ways. During a long training exercise, she "accidently" killed another cadet with a shocking strike to his chest. The effects were so great that the cadet's heart exploded inside of him. Her trainers affectionately nick-named her Cardiac. This would become her code-name. It wasn't long before Sophia was recruited by the Federally-funded Evolutionists. Immediately, she was taken under the wing of one of the group's most feared lieutenants, Tiberius Asad. It was thanks to Asad that Sophia received her level of training at such a fast rate, much faster than other agents.

Sophia, along with a mutant named Venture, became squad leaders of the government's Elite. The Elite were supposed to be the successor to the legendary hero teams of Evolution-X, however, due to years of corrupt leaders, this squad had nothing in common with its heroic predecessor.
