“I can remember the very first time I cried

How I wiped my eyes and buried the pain inside

All of my memories - good and bad – that’s past

Didn’t even take the time to realize…

Starin’ at the cracks in the walls

Cuz I’m waiting for it all to come to an end

Still I curl up right under the bed

Cuz its takin’ over my head all over again”

[edit] Part One: The Death of Innocence

Aurora looked up at her older brother, grinning toothily. The ten year old grinned back at his little sister, then scrunched his face, concentrating. Mud and rocks flew from the ground climbing up his legs, eventually covering his entire body. Then it hardened into a mass of impenetrable rock, covering every square inch of exposed flesh.

“Neato, Sky! You’re like a superhero now!” The six year old Aurora told him.

“Yeah, I guess I am! Criminals beware, the Parker kids are here to arrest you!” Skylar struck the most heroic pose he could think of, causing Ariel to giggle. “But you can’t tell Mom or Dad, okay? This is our secret, Rora.”

“‘Course Sky! I won’t tell nobody!” She mimed locking her lips and throwing away the key.

“Good, ‘cause you know what they say about heroes. I don’t want them to stop us! We’re going to be big, Rora. The most feared heroes in all of Paragon!”

Aurora nods, wide-eyed at the thought. “But I can’t do nothin’ Sky! I don’t have powers.”

Skylar chuckled softly, patting at his pinkish rock armor. “I’ll keep you safe, then, Rora, till you find ‘em.”

The sirens were defeaning.

Rora looked up at her brother, wide eyed as the first ships descended upon Atlas Park. They had been playing outside City Hall, watching all the new heroes like they usually did. The sky had darkened, and the comforting blue glow of the war walls had faded.

The Rikti were coming.

Sky pulled Rora along at a rapid rate, trying to keep to the back alleys and shadows as much as possible. But the large park stood between them and the train. Skylar winced, but made his decision, pulling his little sister through the open area.

They were just at the last hill, Sky broke into a run… And a Rikti priest, along with some conscripts crested the same hill.

“Down Rora!” Skylar screamed, throwing his sister to the ground near the boulders at the base of the hill. “Get in there, Rora! Don’t come out till I get you!” Skylar scrunched his face and covered himself in pink mud as Rora crawled down into a small cavern they had dug out as a fort the previous summer.

Fearfully, she peeked out. Skylar was fully covered in rocks, punching at the conscripts, trying to draw their attention away from his little sister. It was successful, and the four Rikti ganged up on him. Rora screamed…The conscript brought his blade crashing down on Sky, cleaving the rock from his body. Blood squirted out of the wound, thick and red…

Rora watched as Skylar fell to the ground, less than a foot from her. His eyes were glazed over, a look of shock and fear paralyzed on his face. He was dead. The Rikti barked and headed off, leaving Rora there all alone with him.

Time seemed to crawl...

Sunstorm had drawn the unlucky lot of cleanup from the Vanguard, but it was not a task he minded greatly. Very rarely did anyone of Paragon’s civilian residents get caught out in an invasion, so it was usually a fruitless search for wounded.

The man crested the top of a hill, and stared. My mind is playing tricks on me, he thought, because that looks like a human shaped rock. He shrugged, setting off at a brisk pace to investigate.

Once he realized what it was, he broke into a run.

Skylar Parker had shared his secret with Sunstorm about a week ago; the little boy looked up to him, mostly because Sunstorm didn’t talk down to him. And Sunstorm rather liked Sky, seeing a reflection of his host’s younger days in the boy.

Upon reaching the next hill, Sunstorm paused. The scene before him was ghastly.

Skylar has been eviscerated, by the looks of it. His young blood stained the ground around him, and Sunstorm had to bite back a sob. So much potential, wasted. He kneeled beside the boy, turning him over just a bit – a soft sob floated through the air. Sunstorm looked down, near the ground, and was regarded by the deepest green eyes he had ever seen.

“Oh, god!” He hit his comm, calling for a medic. He pulled Sky’s body aside gently, reaching for the child behind those eyes.

She was covered in blood.
